May General Membership Meeting

May 28 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Special Guest Justin Spangler, PE

Join us on May 28th for our General Membership Meeting, with presenter Justin Spangler. He will discuss Pennsylvania’s streams having a long and storied history that spans generations and cultures – culminating as the streams we see today.

We’re often passive observers of what the stream has become, rather than actively understanding the abundant resource that used to be. Justin’s presentation will look at the history of how these stream corridors were made long ago, illustrate the characteristics of abundance in the natural condition, and show examples of past alterations. He will also provide tips on how to read the evidence of relic features recorded in today’s stream banks.

This presentation will show how DFTU’s restoration project at Hammer Creek is actively incorporating these historical benchmarks into a comprehensive floodplain restoration to address the historical watershed impacts.

Justin is a Water Resources Engineer and Senior Associate at LandStudies, Inc. He has been collaboratively developing and progressing the collective understanding of floodplain restoration for the past 17 years, specializing in the identification of historical impacts and producing comprehensive floodplain restoration designs. Justin has also produced educational materials and courses for several project partners and agencies including Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the USDA Natural Resource Conservation Service.

For those of you who have not joined us at the Community Club at Fort Indiantown Gap, please be assured this is an excellent meeting location. We are in a large private room, adjacent to the bar and grill; so many of our attendees arrive early for burgers, beer and conversation before the program begins at 7:00pm. This year’s Chapter President, Chuck Swanderski, runs an excellent meeting. Nice and tight, and operating on the SOT squared formula – start on time and stop on time.

NOTE: There is a newly-constructed main gate now operational at Ft. Indiantown Gap. To access the Community Club for our meetings, take exit 85B north on Rt. 934 (Fisher Road) from I-81 to the main gate. After checking in at the Security Station, the road winds around to a traffic light where you take a right and continue north on Fisher Road. The Community Club is located on the left just before the intersection with Clement Road.
