On April 27, 2021, the Doc Fritchey Chapter of Trout Unlimited hosted renowned entomologist Greg Hoover for his presentation entitled “Brood X: The Methuselah of the Insect World.” This engaging presentation covered the 2021 emergence of the Brood X periodical cicada hatch that would soon inundate central Pennsylvania.

As a courtesy to the chapter, Greg offered to share his recipe for a pattern called the “Hoov’s Cicada,” shown here:

  • Hook
    • Mustad 3366 – size 4 or 2
    • Daiichi 1560 – size 6
    • Tiemco 2302 – size 6

    • Danville flat waxed, 210 denier – Black or orange
  • Body:
    • Fly Foam 1/8”, black (cut foam in 3/8″ wide strip, approximately 3″ long)
    • Dubbing for the underbody Awesome ‘Possum, orange; or medium, orange and black speckled (variegated) chenille
